Confusion can enter our lives just like a weather event.
When it arrives, it’s like standing in the wind, under full sun, in the rain and hail, in the middle of night and day—everything at the same time, in a chaotic mixture of feelings.
This is the starting point from which Gabriella Salvaterra, together with her company (SST – Sense Specific Theatre), offers us a poetic and sensorial experience in which we try to recognize this disorientation and to look together at those fears that hide within our labyrinths and from there shape part of our story.
Nodo in gola is an important turning point toward a new exploration in Gabriella Salvaterra’s artistic path, an intimate succession of sensory poems inspired and guided by what we tell no one.

A collaborator for twenty years of Enrique Vargas, the Italian artist returns to the Funaro in Pistoia
with darkness as a moment of concentration, but also as a way to momentarily alter the psycho-
physical state of participants. Darkness conceals, yet at the same time trains the eye to glimpse and
physically sense even the faintest presence—reflections of light, rustling bodies, images forming at
the edges of our minds…
Three groups and as many guides/shamans disperse through the dimly lit space. Then comes the
moment of choice, as each of us selects from the material rescued from the fury of time
(metaphorically, of air), which has scattered it. Everyone seeks meaning in what they observe, and
all appropriate a part of that memory. Images of a distant past or of a hoped-for future? Everything
is stored and preserved—or perhaps buried—within our memory.

Rarefied and intense, imbued with poetry as always, is the world Gabriella Salvaterra knows how to
evoke in her performances. A Knot in the Throat guides us through an itinerant experience, suspended between light and darkness, in search of a thread of memory moving backward in time,
to the moment when—perhaps in childhood, perhaps later—that knot in the throat, or elsewhere in
the body, crystallized into an unspoken mass or an unexpressed pain…
Any description betrays it, for this is above all an experience—tactile, auditory, olfactory,
emotional…
In the end we understand, as Salvaterra says, that “things are not as they are; they are as we are,”
and that the journey of life is our narration of it, until the moment we can let it go into oblivion. A
language that, in its evanescence, imprints itself persistently on consciousness through the force of
caring for oneself, for the other, for others.

From the point of view of language—and especially of the evolution of the artist’s path in her most
recent creations—this work appears significant within Salvaterra’s poetics. In some respects, it
marks a partial emancipation from the idea of the itinerary in a purely “Sentidos” style.
In this performance, the director gives herself in a demanding and generous way, involving herself
personally in a physical and interpretative commitment. Over the course of about forty minutes, she
moves through very different and strenuous actions and roles. It feels like a personal challenge, a
subjective need to be present, to engage fully with this work and with this audience…
Something strong and new is emerging within her obsessions, making room for new configurations
and artistic possibilities.
